About Me

ArtzAboutIt Ltd

My name is Gabrielle Toseland, and I am an HCPC-registered Integrative Arts Psychotherapist. I hold a BSc in Psychology and Health Studies, an MA in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy from the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE), and additional specialist training in Psychotherapeutic Child Counselling. I also maintain an active creative arts practice, which supports and nourishes the therapeutic work.

I work with children, young people, and adults — people across the lifespan navigating trauma, anxiety, identity questions, relational difficulties, and emotional overwhelm. I offer therapy in-person in Truro, Cornwall and online across the UK.

At the heart of my approach is a commitment to relational depth, creativity, and psychological safety. Whether through image, word, metaphor, sound, or silence, I aim to co-create a space of genuine connection where healing can unfold at your own pace.

“It is in playing and only in playing that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality.”

- Donald Winnicott

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It’s particularly helpful when words are hard to find or when we want to access deeper emotional truths.

Materials such as paint, sandtray, puppets, clay, music, movement, and visual art allow us to externalise and explore what might be held internally. No artistic skill is needed — the process is about meaning, not mastery.

As an integrative arts psychotherapist, I tailor sessions to each person and work relationally, building safety and trust through creative, embodied connection.

Before becoming a therapist

Before training as an art psychotherapist, I worked across education, coaching, and community-based services, supporting both young people and adults. This included one-to-one nannying work, where I developed a strong understanding of early relational needs, child development, and the importance of emotional attunement.

I also held roles in schools, creative outreach projects, and coaching and business environments, where I trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and communication models that support change, reflection, and motivation. This breadth of experience gives me a strong understanding of the systems and emotional landscapes my clients often navigate — including school pressures, parenting demands, or workplace stress — and it informs my integrative, flexible approach.

My Influences & Inspiration

My practice is shaped by a broad and evolving landscape of clinical theory, creative process, and human connection. Key influences include:

  • Donald Winnicott, John Bowlby, Sue Gerhardt – early development, emotional regulation, and holding
  • Dan Siegel, Jaak Panksepp – the emotional brain and interpersonal neurobiology
  • Deb Dana, Stephen Porges, Bessel van der Kolk – trauma, safety, and body-based awareness
  • Graham Music, Karen Treisman, Dan Hughes – developmental trauma, therapeutic parenting, and relational practice
  • Margot Sunderland, Petruska Clarkson – child-centred work, neuroscience in therapy, and integrative models
  • Lisa Ruth Mitchell, Marian Liebmann – socially engaged and community-based arts therapy
  • Brené Brown – shame, vulnerability, and living with authenticity

I take an integrative approach, drawing on:

  • Creative arts modalities including image-making, symbolism, metaphor, visual journaling, sandtray, puppets, movement, music, and clay
  • Attachment and trauma-informed thinking, including developmental theory and research from neuroscience
  • Mindfulness, psychoeducation, and body-based awareness, including insights from yoga and movement practices
  • Elements of Transactional Analysis (TA) and Gestalt therapy, supporting present-moment insight and relational awareness
  • A client-centred perspective that honours your story, strengths, unique pace, and individual journey

Continued Learning & Reflective Practice

I engage in regular CPD (continuing professional development) to keep my practice up-to-date, ethical, and responsive. Recent learning has focused on:

  • Trauma stabilisation and recovery from sexual violence (NHS Pathfinder)
  • Perinatal and parent–infant mental health (BAAT, Confer)
  • The polyvagal theory and relational safety (Confer)
  • Intersectionality and systemic awareness in therapy (Sunflower Network, IJAT)
  • Safeguarding in private practice (Sunflower network)
  • Creative journaling, maternal mental health, and reflective supervision
  • Integration of the most current HCPC and BAAT Standards of Proficiency into everyday practice

I have a particular interest in the connection between physical and emotional wellbeing — how our bodies hold experience, and how movement and regulation can support therapeutic change. My own practice of yoga and embodied awareness supports not only my own wellbeing, but also my ability to stay connected and attuned to clients.

“Trauma is not just an event stored in the mind — it’s held in the body. To heal, we must work with both.”

— Bessel van der Kolk
